Word Order

Learn about the word order when you have more than one adjective and do the exercises to practise using it.

In English, the proper order for adjectives is known as the Royal Order of Adjectives. The Royal Order of Adjectives is as follows:

  • Determiner (This isn’t a type of adjective, however, determiners—including articles, possessives, and demonstratives—are considered in the Royal Order of Adjectives. They must always come before adjectives and the nouns they modify.)

        The, your, our, these

  • Quantity

One, seven, many, few.

  • Opinion

Delicious, heroic, misunderstood, valuable.

Sometimes, this category is divided into two categories: general and specific opinion, with general opinion coming before specific opinion. For example, you might describe a specific tablet as a popular, perfect choice for digital illustrators. The general opinion here is that it’s popular, an opinion held by many (and easily verified). The more specific opinion is that it’s perfect for digital illustrators—it’s your personal opinion, but it might not be as widely held as the opinion that it’s popular.

  • Size

Huge, tiny, medium-sized, small.

  • Age

New, old, decades-old, second-newest

  • Shape

Square, round, triangular, geometric

  • Color

Blue, gray, yellow, red

  • Origin/material

American, wooden, velvet, African

  • Qualifier

Hound dog, denim skirt, pickup truck, vampire bat

Colosseum is in Rome

The Colosseum is in Rome, the capital of Italy. More precisely, it is on the east bank of the Tiber, the river that crosses the city, east of the ancient Roman forum. A forum in antiquity was a geographical area in which were the main buildings of power, as well as the large square on which the population met. It was both a busy place to live, a place to get married, big parties, community meetings, and so on. The stadium was less than a kilometer to the southwest, the Capitol was a little over a mile to the west.

Colosseum was first called the Flavian Amphitheatre or in Latin, the Amphitheatrum Flavium. This was after Vespasian and Titus who had the family name of Flavius. It was used for gladiatorial contests, and other shows like animal hunts, in which animals would hunt and eat prisoners; or in which gladiators would fight against animals. There were also executions of prisoners, plays, and battle scenes; sometimes it was filled with water to fight sea battles. The people of Rome could go into the Colosseum without any costs; it was free.

In the Middle Ages, after the mid-fifth century, it was no longer used for performances. It was then used as housing, workshops, a Christian shrine, and as a supply of building stones.

It is now in ruins because of earthquakes. The Colosseum is a symbol of the Roman Empire. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions. On Good Fridays, the Pope leads a torch lit "Way of the Cross" procession around the various levels of the amphitheatre.

The Colosseum appears on the Euro five cent coins.

Semarang Antiques Market

The Old Town is one of the favorite tours in Semarang City which has the nickname Little Netherland. Located on Jl. Lt. Gen. Suprapto, Tanjung Mas, North Semarang District, Semarang City, Central Java. This area is named Kota Lama because the buildings that stand in the area have an ancient architectural style. The Old City of Semarang is a historical witness to civilization that occurred some time ago. This tourist spot offers beautiful European architectural style buildings from the 1700s. There are at least 50 ancient buildings around the Old City of Semarang, the total area of which is around 31 hectares. The European-style building has become a trigger for the arrival of tourists from within and outside the country, and of course it has not escaped the interest of photography lovers to take some vintage-style pictures.

The history of Kota Lama begins with the Mataram Kingdom which agreed to surrender Semarang to the VOC as payment for VOC assistance in dealing with the Trunojoyo rebellion. This agreement occurred on January 15, 1678 ago. Since then, several buildings have been built, ranging from government buildings, residents' houses, to canals and a fort called Vijhoek. In the 19th to 20th centuries, the Old City of Semarang became a trading center. The Old City of Semarang is a tourist spot that is very thick with historical value and buildings with colonial style. Existing buildings cannot be changed or destroyed, because they have been designated as National Cultural Heritage areas.

When you are in the Old City of Semarang, you will feel a sensation like you are in the Netherlands, so it's no wonder that you get the nickname Little Netherland. There are lots of ancient buildings, such as Greja Blenduk, Berok Bridge, Marabunta Building, Semarang Major Post Office, Marba Building, and many more. Now, beside Greja Blenduk, a park is built called Taman Srigunting. In the Srigunting park there is a large, lush banyan tree, so during the day the park doesn't feel so hot. Besides the Srigunting park, there used to be many stalls lined up selling various antiques with various colors and shapes and of course unique. Because the Mayor's mission was to beautify the tourist area in Semarang, and to keep the Old Town area clean and tidy, the antique dealer was moved to a building located right behind the Greja Blenduk.

When you are in front of the Antiques Market building, there are two doors, an entrance and an exit. Outside the building several garden chairs and a place for washing hands are provided, so that the health protocol is maintained. When you enter, you will be greeted by the clothing section. You will find lots of clothes, especially batik, Indonesian clothing with various models that are up to date and closely follow today's fashion trends.

Swipe a little to the right, there is a Food Court that provides a variety of foods ranging from heavy meals to light snacks, and of course not a few sell drinks too. There are many chairs and tables, as well as rotating chairs that visitors can use to rest. So when visitors are tired of walking around the place, they can sit and enjoy the food being traded.

On the way back to the right there is a wall made of plywood hung with several beautiful paintings painted by artists, the paintings are grouped from textured, batik, naturalism themes, to the shots taken by reliable photographers. If we look to the right, we will see a room with a glass wall which contains household furniture such as tables, chairs, and home decorations, along with prices. It seems that the room was deliberately closed and not just anyone could enter, because it was to maintain the quality of the furniture being sold.

Finally, we arrive at the core of this market, namely the antique stalls. Behind the glass room there were many stalls selling antiques. The ambiance there is very beautiful, even though it's crowded, the room still feels warm but cool, it's hard to explain the situation there, but basically the atmosphere there makes visitors feel at home for a long time walking around there. Lots of items are sold at the neatly arranged rows of stalls, including old coins and paper money, irons from the 19th century, some old school comics and novels, knick-knacks from big too small. There are also about two stalls that sell special old-fashioned antique plates, which are beautiful and are usually sought after by collectors to be displayed in their homes. There are several display cases containing various camera brands, and the types also vary, ranging from analog cameras to digital cameras, and some are already labeled with prices so that visitors can estimate the price of the camera being sold without having to ask the seller. Not only knick knacks, but the Kota Lama Antique Market also sells toys from used and new ones.

There are so many kinds of items that are sold at the Semarang Antiques Market, for those of you outside of Semarang City who are planning a vacation in Semarang City, this Old Town Antiques Market should be on your list of places you want to visit. Because this place is the main destination for ancient objects, it's not uncommon for you to find collectors from various regions in Semarang visiting this place. In fact, there are some who come from out of town. But it turns out, not only collectors who come here. Often I see many young people who come to take pictures happily. This happens because this one tourist destination has aesthetic and Instagram able photo spots. Even though it's just for sightseeing, this place is really worth it to visit, especially since it's strategically located in the middle of the Semarang Old Town area.
